CEBU, Philippines – CEBU-based bulk water provider, Mactan Rock Industries Inc., (MRII) has pursued expansion plans in the Visayas through joint ventures (JV) with local government units in Bacolod and Iloilo.
MRII chairman Antonio Tompar disclosed the company won the bid to provide 150,000 cubic meters of bulk water a day in Bacolod for 35 years and a 10-year contract to supply 5,000 cubic meters a day in Iloilo.
Tompar said the company won the bids for offering the cheapest price of water. Water in Bacolod (north) is priced P8.85 per cubic meter while in the south is at P9.85 per cubic meter. In Iloilo, it is priced P10.75 per cubic meter.
The ventures will require MRII to put up a combined investment of close to P1 billion, said Tompar. MRII has over 50 bulk water supply plants spread across the country. It built five additional water plants last year.
Tompar sees an increased demand of water following the accelerated developments in Metro Cebu, as reflected by robust developments in real estate, commercial and tourism-related businesses.
The company also expects an increased demand for desalinated water.
Tompar said a lot of large consumers like hotels, restaurants, resorts, manufacturing companies, and shopping malls have already turned to desalinated water as an alternative source.
